WRITTEN OR VISUAL STORYLINES

Written or Visual Story lines.
Both storyboards and 'visual writing' that help the film making team to visualize the production are very important in the pre-production process. They help cast and crew to understand what the director wants in the film, this includes where characters and set in the frame is placed, this can also include props.

MOVE IMAGE TO OTHER POST  What is a visual story line?
A visual story line can be one of various things; a storyboard DESCRIBE a photo story DES a 'visually written' treatment. It shows a story in a visual way so that people can understand how you want your product.

Some directors prefer visual over written and others prefer written over visual, however, they both complement each other when you are showing your product to someone.

Depending on the director’s background, not just in film, helps them to pick what they like best; written or visual. Every director has a different skill set therefore they are stronger in some elements and weaker in others.
Directors that have a strong point of acting can have an acting background, for example, Clint Eastwood (Skyfall) was an actor before he became a director, therefore when he directs he has a good and clear understanding of what the actors should do and how they should do it. Other actors that became a director are; Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Gene Kelly (on the town, singin’ in the rain).

Other directors trained and have an art background, therefore they help out with the sets and have a clear vision when reading the script for the first time, compared to other directors who don’t know what they should do for a set so they ask the team for help. An example of a director who has an art background is Ridley Scott.

Technicians are also directors. This means that they are hand on and are able to have a good understanding and work closely with the technical team when in pre-production. An example of a director who is also a technician is James Cameron.

Another element that directors have also worked with is writing, this is a benefit to them because it means that they can develop story lines and characters, for example Brad Bird (the incredibles), Joss Whendon (the avengers), George Lucas (Star Wars). All these directors are also or was writers.

Cinematographer's also become directors, for example, Jan De Bont. As a cinematographer he worked on 'All the right moves', and then he went to work on 'Speed' as the director. Being a cinematographer and then going into directing, gives you an advantage in camera work and lighting.
